Below is our palette of peonies which will be available in the autumn of this year. Most of these will be available as bare root plants, ready to be planted ASAP. Later (in the spring), they will be only available in pots.
Itoh peonies are a rare and sought-after category that combines the best traits of both herbaceous and tree peonies. They feature the extravagantly large blossoms and strong, sturdy stems of the tree peony, but go dormant in winter like its herbaceous parent. They were the work of the Japanese breeder, Mr. Itoh, who was told such a cross was impossible. He persisted, and did make successful crosses but sadly, did not live to see them bloom.
Unlike the common garden peonies, Itoh’s have very strong, upright stems. They’re easily grown in a sunny location and are not too fussy about soil conditions, thriving in sandy, clay or loamy soil. Like all peonies, these beautiful ornamentals are deer and rabbit resistant, attractive to butterflies, and make wonderful cut flowers.
Peonies do not like to be moved once established and will live for decades in the right location. Fall is the recommended time to prune and plant peonies to prepare for spring flowering. Prune Itoh peonies back to 1 to 3 inches from the ground in the fall. Throughout the blooming season, remove spent blooms just below the base of the flower to prevent seed development.
