Crocuses – Fall 2024

Crocus ‘Whitewell Purple’

Below is our palette of crocuses which will be available in the autumn of this year. These will be available in September and October, ready to be planted ASAP. Later (in the spring), they will be only available in pots to guarantee that you get blooms.

Crocuses in general will bloom in early spring just after the snowdrops (galanthus), which for us on Vancouver Island is around February. They naturalize readily, and will return year after year.

Crocus ‘Jeanne D’Arc’
Extremely vigorous, long-lived and appropriate for naturalizing, this lovely crocus belongs to the Crocus vernus group, known for blooms that are larger than any other crocus. First introduced in the 1940s, Jeanne d’Arc is still considered the world’s best white crocus The elegant petals are adorned with delicate, purple veining, and a small deep purple base with a striking bright orange stamens. Expect blooms for 3 weeks in early spring. 4-6”

Crocus ‘Yalta’
Crocus ‘Yalta’ is incredibly ravishing with silvery white outside petals, and rich blue-violet inner petals that contrast beautifully against the brilliant orange anthers. Borne atop dark purple stems, the blossoms are among the largest crocus flowers. Grass-like foliage features narrow dark green leaves with a very fine silver stripe. 4″

Crocus chrysanthus ‘Orange Monarch’
This unique snow crocus, in a rare shade of orange with a contrasting purple-to-brown flame, offers a fabulous spring welcome on dreary winter days. Much loved by bees, this naturalizing beauty is easy to grow in the garden or in containers. 4-6”

Crocus minimus ‘Spring Beauty’
Incredibly ravishing with its pale lilac petals flamed dark plum on the outside, and a paler lavender-purple on the inside with contrasting yellow anthers. Blooms are quite small, but are produced in such profusion (4-7 per bulb) that they make up for their small stature. Its narrow grass-like foliage has a very thin central silver stripe. Blooming early in the season, the blooms open only when there is a lot of light; they close up in rainy weather and at night. Did you know that crocus bulbs remaining in the ground will always bloom a bit earlier than the ones planted in the previous year? 3” tall.

Crocus tomassianus ‘Barr’s Purple’
Among the earliest to flower, the rich amethyst-violet flowers with a silvery reverse are graced by golden-orange anthers and grass-like foliage with narrow, median silvery stripes. The profuse flowering and spontaneous self-propagation make this crocus a very good choice for naturalizing. Like most crocus, graceful 4″ tall blooms open to the sunshine and close during rainy periods or when night draws in. 4” and are a magnet for early pollinators. Early spring.

Crocus ‘Advance’
Elegant goblet-shaped blooms of soft yellow with dusky plum-purple feathering and a violet-blue base form a beguiling colour combination, with the bright orange stamens adding a fiery spark. A multiple award winner for its form and performance. Late winter/ early spring. 4-6”

Crocus chrysanthus ‘Lady Killer’
This eye-catching early spring snow crocus (C. chrythansus) features snowy white petals with a delicate brushstroke of purple, and a pure white interior with vibrant orange stamens. Snow crocuses are long-lived, produce multiple blooms per bulb, and are great naturalizers. Perfect for early spring pollinators. 4-6”

Crocus tommasinianus ‘Whitewell Purple’
Vigorous, Crocus tommasinianus ‘Whitewell Purple’ features elegant, slender-petalled, purple flowers adorned with silvery mauve inside and bright orange anthers. The grass-like foliage displays narrow, median silvery stripes. Borne on sturdy stems, the blooms withstand wind and rain. A member of the “Tommies” subspecies, that are renowned for their profuse flowering and spontaneous self-propagation making this crocus a very great choice for naturalizing. Once the corms of ‘Whitewell Purple’ have established themselves, their flowers will emerge year after year in seemingly infinite numbers. This early spring-flowering crocus is one of the best for naturalizing in grass. 3-4”

Crocus ‘Blue Marlin’
When backlit with the sun, these charming blossoms of take on the elegance of a hand-painted lamp shade. Soft lilac and purple striations grace the outer petals that open to glowing white interiors with a dark yellow eye peeking from the base. A prolific bloomer and a great naturalizer. Early spring. 4”

This cheerful yellow bloom sports a black stripe like a racing bumblebee. It bunches and naturalizes over time. Earliest to bloom of the crocuses. Deer resistant. 4-6″ tall.

Autumn Blooming Crocuses

These are unique amongst crocuses – many of them feature pale stems that make them seem almost like ethereal mushrooms rising out of the dirt. The famous saffron crocus is also fall blooming.

Crocus ochroleucus (autumn crocus)
These prolific bloomers send up wineglass-shaped flowers that bring welcomed colour in the fading autumn garden. Wild flowers native to Europe and Asia Minor, they prefer sunny, well drained locations where they will naturalize happily. The grass-like foliage grows after the flowers have faded, and like most crocus, the blooms open to the sunshine and close during rainy periods or when night draws in. Deer resistant. 4” tall. Autumn blooming.
