Crocuses in general will bloom in early spring just after the snowdrops (galanthus), which for us on Vancouver Island is around February. They naturalize readily, and will return year after year.

Crocus ‘Blue Ocean’
‘Blue Ocean’ features a semi-large flower size, between the small snow crocuses and the larger Dutch hybrids, making it a perfect choice for naturalizing large areas. Early blooming and super floriferous, the bright blue-purple flowers are punctuated by stunning tangerine orange stamens. Like all crocuses, they provide an excellent food source for early pollinators, and on a sunny day, the blooms are alive with the soft buzzing of many foragers. 4-5″.

Crocus vernus ‘Striped Beauty’
Large white blooms traced through with fine dark purple stripes. Deer resistant. 4″ tall.

Crocus minimus ‘Spring Beauty’
Incredibly ravishing with its pale lilac petals flamed dark plum on the outside, and a paler lavender-purple on the inside with contrasting yellow anthers. Blooms are quite small, but are produced in such profusion (4-7 per bulb) that they make up for their small stature. Its narrow grass-like foliage features narrow, dark green leaves with a very thin central silver stripe. Blooming early in the season, the blooms open only when there is a lot of light; they close up in rainy weather and at night. Did you know that crocus bulbs remaining in the ground will always bloom a bit earlier than the ones planted in the previous year? 3” tall.

Snow Crocus ‘Whitewell Purple’
Vigorous, Crocus tommasinianus ‘Whitewell Purple’ features elegant, slender-petalled, purple flowers adorned with silvery mauve inside and bright orange anthers. The grass-like foliage displays narrow, median silvery stripes. Born on sturdy stems, the blooms withstand wind and rain. A member of the “Tommies” subspecies, that are renowned for their profuse flowering and spontaneous self-propagation making this crocus a very great choice for naturalizing. Once the corms of ‘Whitewell Purple’ have established themselves, their flowers will emerge year after year in seemingly infinite numbers. This early spring-flowering crocus is one of the best for naturalizing in grass. 3-4” tall

Crocus chrysanthus ‘Early Gold’.
This cheerful yellow bloom sports a black stripe like a racing bumblebee. It bunches and naturalizes over time. Earliest to bloom of the crocuses. Deer resistant. 4-6″ tall.

Autumn Blooming Crocuses

These are unique amongst crocuses – many of them feature pale stems that make them seem almost like ethereal mushrooms rising out of the dirt. The famous saffron crocus is also fall blooming.

These prolific bloomers send up wineglass-shaped flowers that bring welcomed colour in the fading autumn garden. Wild flowers native to Europe and Asia Minor, they prefer sunny, well drained locations where they will naturalize happily. The grass-like foliage grows after the flowers have faded, and like most crocus, the blooms open to the sunshine and close during rainy periods or when night draws in. Deer resistant. 4” tall. Autumn blooming.
