Gardenlore’s Tulips for 2023

Below is our palette of tulips which will be available in the autumn of this year. Most of these will be available as bulbs, ready to be planted ASAP. Later (in the spring), they will be only available in pots to guarantee that you get blooms.

Tulip ‘Allison Bradley’
This beauty boasts stunning, big, billowy fully-double peony-like blooms in shades of deep wine-purple. A recent introduction, a cross between strong-growing parents ‘Monte Carlo’ and ‘Negrita,’, this beauty does her pedigree proud, offering weeks of vibrant colour in the garden and a lengthy vase life indoors. The vigorous bulbs may produce three or more Peony-shaped flowers each. Early. 16”

Tulipa ‘Continental’
This recent introduction, dark maroon-purple, almost ebony, Triumph tulip is glossy, stately, elegant, and accentuated by a dark stem. The darkest tulip we know, very similar to Queen of Night, but it blooms earlier in the season. Triumph tulips are a combination of both Early and Late Single tulips, offering all the best features of each: medium-tall height, strong sturdy stems, a rainbow of colour choices, and are easily grown in beds or containers and make lovely cut flowers. 18-20”

This sweetheart is our personal favourite of the Van Eijk family, a group of early blooming Darwin Hybrids which feature large, classic blooms on strong stems. Darwin’s are known as the best and most popular group for landscape use, featuring the strongest perennial qualities among the hybrids, and this lovely creates a truly elegant display in the garden or vase. 18”

Tulip ‘Blushing Lady’
Very large, yet supremely elegant lily-shaped blossoms of sunset-flamed soft rosy-pink, blending to soft yellow on the petals’ edges. When closed, they have a quiet sculptural quality, but in the sun, with their petals unfurled, they look like a flock of exotic birds taking flight! Tulip ‘Elegant Lady’
An incredibly beautiful, heirloom lily-flowered tulip featuring a creamy yellow flower with pointed and slightly reflexed petals with a delicate, warm pink flush. It is extremely elegant and graceful when swaying in the late spring breeze. First introduced in 1953 by Nieuwenhuis Bros., a well-acclaimed breeder of many wonderful lily-flowered tulips.

Parrot Tulips

Tulipa ‘Apricot Parrot’
Ranked as one of the top rewarded tulips for its excellence and easy culture, this award-winner is one of the most fabulous tulips with its over-sized apricot-pink petals flushed with green and yellow stripes, and wavy-edged and fringed like feathers. Botanical Tulips

Tulipa ‘Danique’
If you favour the unique, then you must grow the botanical tulip ‘Danique’. It sports beautiful, multi-flowering star-shaped blooms with petals that are predominately dusky, peach-pink, and centres of black and yellow—which make a fabulous contrast. Like all botanical, or species tulips, it is strongly perennial—in other words, it will permanently colonize an area when in a position it likes, unlike many of the large hybrid tulips. Tulipa pulchella ‘Pearsian Pearl’
Small and delicate, Tulipa pulchella ‘Persian Pearl’ is a real delight in the garden with its starry flowers opening to expose their bright golden heart in full sun. Quite short, this gem still makes a striking impact with its lovely colour combination: magenta-rose on the outside, and cyclamen-purple on the inside- a beautiful sight! Like all botanical, or species tulips, it is strongly perennial—in other words, it will permanently colonize an area when it’s in a position it likes, unlike many of the large hybrid tulips. Adding a grace note to spring gardens is this fragrant dwarf botanical tulip, which blooms low to the ground and attracts pollinators. Tulipa ‘Interaction’
White oblong buds open wide to greet a sunny day and reveal star-shaped petals with wide yellow centers. Not to be outdone by its charming flowers, its variegated foliage blades flash green and yellow. Foliage may be outlined and tinted with red during cooler temperatures. Tulipa sylvestris
We are ridiculously happy to have found a source for Woodland tulips (Tulipa sylvestris), a 16th century heirloom. It’s a tall botanical tulip (12”) with arching or nodding golden yellow buds with green mid ribs opening upwards to starry blooms with pointed petals. It’s perfect for wildflower meadows or under trees in dappled light. Like all botanical tulips, they are strongly perennial and will naturalize when happy (unlike the large Dutch hybrids), coming back year after year, and each stem can produce many nodding, fragrant blooms.

Tulipa clusiana ‘Peppermint Stick’
Resembling candy canes, this lovely award winning bi-colour tulip can make you swoon. Sending up small, slender upright leaves and eye-catching, narrow and pointed, white flowers striped with cherry red lines on their outer petals. The blossoms close at night or on cloudy days but completely open on sunny days, forming a perfect star. Like all botanical tulips, wet, windy weather during its flowering period in mid spring will have little effect on the blooms.
